A SKEWED LOOK AT THE PAST CULTURE WEEK
It goes without saying that it is quite a phenomenon owing to the hype and air of anticipation that do overhang Kenyatta University whenever it’s in the offing. This particular Culture Week wasn’t inclined to be different and it was a success though also controversial as it elicited extreme sentiments. What was to be a colorful opening ceremony turned bizarre, the rain being on the offensive. Maybe this was a premonition to the many incidences to follow .How else does one coin an explanation for accidents such as collapsing tent s injuring students?
Tuesday was
solo night and plainly, it offered a forum for talent to be showcased. A case
in point was this guy with his own composition,’Makombo’.This was a masterpiece
and deservedly, he bagged the leading prize. The female singer who was the to be
proclaimed winner dazzled the then ecstatic crowd of revelers with her prowess
in waist twisting(read dancing)that complement her unparalleled vocals. Mejja rocked especially with his
latest,’Landlord’.However; there were theatrics that surrounded Cannibal’s
performance. It was marred by mass exodus from Bishop Square, some hurling
insults in the process. Of interest was this fellow’s observation that the
coastal hip-hop star was entertaining a growing tummy, something not so cool
considering his small body. Despite all that, he managed to his loyal fans.
The following
days went smoothly with little drama recorded though not for Friday. The
expectation in the audience was high, the rain that literally fell the whole
night proving to be no deterrence. There was disappointment; later. There was
no musician to grace the occasion! To add to this was insecurity that heightened.
Incidences of students being mugged and robbed of their valuables within the confines
of campus are quite unfortunate and negate the noticeable progress made by the
university in its bid to expand.
Whatever
negativity, it still deserves a plus. Let’s judge it by the derived benefits we
got, like……ladies got a full dose of the Abuja accent (no pun intended, though!)
